DENIM DUNGAREE: The Japanese Kids' Brand Made to Outlast Childhood

Most kids' clothes have a short life. A season, maybe two, a few too many trips through the wash, and then they're outgrown, faded, or both. DENIM DUNGAREE starts from the opposite idea. This Japanese label treats children's clothing not as something you use up, but as something that gains value the longer your family lives in it.

We'd wanted to bring this brand to our shelves for a long time, and it has finally landed at littlewild kids. Here's what makes it special.

Who Is DENIM DUNGAREE?

DENIM DUNGAREE is part of FITH, a Japanese childrenswear company founded in Osaka in 1982 with a focus on soft natural fabrics and easy, long-lasting basics. FITH launched DENIM DUNGAREE (originally DENIM & DUNGAREE) in 1992 as its own denim line, and more than three decades later it's still the label in the family with the most character: American-casual staples reinterpreted through a very Japanese obsession with fabric and finishing.

The brand's guiding promise is simple: childrenswear that doesn't lose to time. The pieces are designed to be worn hard, passed from older sibling to younger, and pulled out of a keepsake box years later still looking good. Honestly, often looking better.

What Makes It Different

Vintage character, built in from day one

DENIM DUNGAREE's look is inspired by recycling and rework: garments that feel like they've already had a life before they reach you. Fabrics go through extra washing and finishing after they're made, so a brand-new tee arrives with the soft hand and lived-in color of a thrift-store treasure.

Handwork you can see

Rather than printing a fake "distressed" effect, the brand recreates many of its details by hand, piece by piece. That's why patches sit just slightly differently from one garment to the next, and why the scribble graphics look like they were actually drawn. No two are perfectly identical, which is a big part of the charm.

Made to be handed down

Because the clothes already look worn-in, everyday wear doesn't "ruin" them. Grass stains, fading and softening just add to the story. For parents who buy with siblings or future hand-me-downs in mind, that changes the math on cost per wear.

What's in Our First Drop

Our first DENIM DUNGAREE delivery is all about fall and winter layering:

Most pieces come in several washed colorways, so you can mix and match across the collection. Quantities are limited, as this first drop is a small, carefully chosen edit.

DENIM DUNGAREE Size Guide: Japanese Sizes Explained

Like most Japanese childrenswear, DENIM DUNGAREE sizes are labeled by your child's height in centimeters, not by age. Our first drop runs from 105 to 135 cm. Here's a quick conversion:

Japanese size Child's height Approx. US size
105 about 39–43 in 4
115 about 43–47 in 5–6
125 about 47–51 in 7–8
135 about 51–55 in 9–10

Tip: measure your child standing against a wall without shoes and go by height first. If they're between sizes, size up. These pieces are built to last, so a little room means more seasons of wear.

How to Care for Vintage-Washed Kids' Clothes

  • Turn garments inside out and wash on cold to protect prints and patches
  • Hang or lay flat to dry; skip the high-heat dryer to limit shrinking
  • Don't worry about gradual fading or softening. That's exactly how these clothes are meant to age

Why We Chose DENIM DUNGAREE

At littlewild kids, we look for brands that are made with care and built to last, like Konges Sløjd and our other European favorites. DENIM DUNGAREE shares that slow-fashion heart but brings something new to our shelves: a relaxed, vintage-Americana attitude with Japanese craftsmanship behind every seam. It's for kids who climb, dig and live in their clothes, and for parents who'd rather buy fewer, better pieces.
