Thanksgiving with Kids: Cozy Outfits, Kids' Table Activities & Little Gifts for the Host
Thanksgiving with little ones is a long day. There's the drive (or the flight), the outfit you hope survives until the family photo, a dinner that always starts later than planned, and that stretch of afternoon when the grown-ups want to linger and the kids very much do not.
We've found it helps to plan around three moments: the photo, the table, and the long afternoon. Get those right and everyone, including you, actually gets to enjoy the day. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26 this year, so here's everything we'd pull together now.
1. What to Wear: Thanksgiving Outfits for Kids
A good Thanksgiving outfit has to do two jobs at once: look lovely in photos, and stay comfortable through hours of sitting, playing and napping in a warm house. Our three rules:
- Layer it. Kitchens get hot and backyard walks get chilly. A cardigan over a dress or tee lets you adjust all day.
- Choose soft fabrics. Nothing scratchy, stiff or fussy. If they can't sit cross-legged in it, it won't last until dessert.
- Go for harvest tones. Merlot, rose, cream, navy and warm neutrals photograph beautifully against autumn light and a dinner table.
For girls: a dress, a cardigan and good tights
Deep red is our favorite Thanksgiving color, and the Konges Sløjd Bowie Dress in Merlot nails it. For something softer and more romantic, the Ally Long Sleeve Flower Dress in Veiled Rose already has sleeves built in, which means one less layer to keep track of. The Mei Dress in Smoke Gray is a calm, grown-up option, and if you love a coordinated look, pair the Collette Dress with its matching Collette Cardigan. For a French twist, the Bachaa Augustine Dress is as pretty as it gets.
Then add a cardigan for when the porch gets cold: the Belou Cardigan in Cherry or the creamy Cocolo Cardigan in Buttercream go with almost anything.
Don't skip the tights. Late November is cold in most of the country, and a good pair makes a dress wearable all day. We love Collégien's Angélique Pointelle Merino Wool Tights in Vieux Rose for warmth, or the Anthéa Jacquard Flower Pointelle Tights for a little extra detail. Browse the full Collégien collection for more colors.
For boys: one great knit does the work
A classic sweater looks polished without feeling like a costume. The Belou Knit Sweater in Piccolo Scottie is our pick: soft, a little playful and smart enough for the table. Want something dressier? The Konges Sløjd Rocky Blazer and matching Rocky Pants are a sweet take on a grown-up look, and still easy to play in. For layering over a tee, the Barli Cardigan in Navy Stripe and the colorful Billi Knit Cardigan are year-round favorites.
For babies and toddlers: comfort first
The littlest guests will probably nap in whatever they wear to dinner, so keep it soft. The organic cotton Basic Blouse & Pants Set in Teddy Bear is cozy enough for the car seat and cute enough for photos. For little girls, the Magot Overall Dress in Teddy Coeur layers easily over a long-sleeve top.
Finish with a bow
A small hair accessory pulls the whole look together. Try the Konges Sløjd Velvet Bow Pearly Hair Clip, Mimi & Lula's sweet Granny Knitted Bow Clic Clacs, or a set of Velvet Bow Scrunchies so everyone gets one.
Our best tip: travel in comfy clothes and change into the nice outfit once you arrive. And pack a spare top. Gravy happens.
2. The Kids' Table: Keeping Little Hands Busy
The secret to a happy kids' table is having something waiting there before the food arrives. Set a small activity at each seat and you'll buy yourself a calm 20 minutes while the turkey gets carved.
Set up a coloring station
Roll out kraft paper as a tablecloth and let kids draw right on it. A cup of OOLY Double Up! Double-Ended Crayons gives you twice the colors in half the space. Peanuts fans (and anyone who grew up watching A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving) will love the OOLY x Peanuts Snoopy Coloring Travel Kit or the Peanuts Scratch Art Kit.
Try this: Thankful Leaf place cards
This is our favorite way to bring a little gratitude to the table without making it feel like homework:
- Cut leaf shapes out of paper or card stock (or make your own paper together with the Elseware DIY Paper Making Kit the weekend before).
- Write each guest's name on one side.
- Ask the kids to draw or write one thing they're thankful for on the back.
- Use them as place cards, then read a few out loud before dessert.
Even the littlest ones can scribble a picture, and grandparents tend to keep these for years.
Games for between dinner and pie
There's always a gap between the main course and dessert. Fill it with a game that kids and adults can play together. The Maileg Memory Game is beautifully illustrated and easy for all ages, and Londji's Cluck, Cluck! The Fox! and Where Are My Socks? are reliably giggly.
For toddlers at the table
Cranberry sauce and white tablecloths don't mix, so a long-sleeve bib that covers arms as well as fronts is worth packing. A familiar cup like the Grosmimi Cream Bunny Straw Cup makes a new table feel a little more like home, and the Oli and Carol Pepa the Apple Bowl & Spoon Set is fittingly autumnal, too.
3. The Long Afternoon (and the Drive Home)
After dinner, the adults settle in. Kids need something quiet to do, and maybe somewhere soft to rest.
- Quiet play that packs small: the CONNETIX Travel Mini Pack fits in a diaper bag and builds anywhere, and the Floss & Rock Chalkboard Sketchbook is a mess-free car activity.
- A cuddly friend for naps away from home: Jellycat's Flufflet Bunnies come in perfect harvest shades, from Wheat to Oat to Fawn. For babies, Maileg's My First Teddy is a gentle first companion.
4. Little Gifts for the Host
If you're heading to someone else's house, a small thank-you from the kids means a lot more than another bottle of wine. A few ideas:
- For a host with young kids: a Maileg mouse is the perfect little present. The King Mouse Dad and Prince Mouse Big Brother are charming, and the Maileg Bonfire Set feels made for cozy November evenings. See the full Maileg mice collection.
- For cousins: a small art kit, like the OOLY x Peanuts DIY Shrink Art, gives them something to do together after dinner.
- For grandparents: honestly? The Thankful Leaf place card. Frame it.

FAQ
What should kids wear to Thanksgiving dinner?
Choose soft, comfortable pieces your child can sit and play in for hours, in warm autumn colors like merlot, rose, cream or navy. Layering works best: a dress or tee with a cardigan or sweater, plus warm tights for girls in colder weather.
How do you keep kids entertained at Thanksgiving?
Set a small activity at each kids' table seat before the food arrives, such as crayons on a kraft-paper tablecloth or a coloring kit. Plan a simple game for the gap between dinner and dessert, and bring quiet, compact toys for the afternoon and the drive home.
What can kids bring as a Thanksgiving hostess gift?
A small toy for the host's children, an art kit to share with cousins, or a handmade card or place card drawn by your child all make thoughtful, kid-sized thank-yous.
When is Thanksgiving 2026?
Thanksgiving 2026 is on Thursday, November 26.
